We spent a day learning about the geography of the route between Calcutta and Singapore. It was interesting to go on Google Earth and track the route Passepartout and his master Mr Fogg took.
We learnt about:
- The Bay of Bengal
- The Strait of Malacca
- Singapore
- Gothic Architecture
- Samuel Morse
Fix sends a telegraph to Great Britain to demand an arrest warrant. This was a perfect opportunity to do a quick inventor study on Samuel Morse, the man responsible for the invention of the telegraph and the Morse code.

Around the Dictionary in 80 Words
This week’s words were written on the board and the race was on to get them all used up in one week. This has been a fun way to learn words which wouldn’t otherwise come up in general conversation:

Yup, lots of lovely effortless learning going on here at angelicscalliwags. This whole scrap book thing was genius (even if I do say so myself 😉 ) Each morning, for a couple hours, I read aloud and we do research together, download pictures (if I haven’t already done it myself), a little bit of cutting and sticking and we are done for the day. I can’t believe the sheer number of topics we have covered in such a short time.
Tomorrow I will be posting about Great Britain’s dubious connection to the Opium sales in India and China during the 19th century. Sometimes I am not proud to be British 🙁
We read about the opium wars last term. Nasty stuff indeed! This is probably a silly question, Claire, but I was having a clear out (inspired by you!) and I came across Michael Palin’s Around the World in 80 Days DVD – do you want it? (Imagine you already have it if it was on your list … you’re pretty organised!) But let me know if you do and I’ll pop it in the post.

So I totally misread that as Day of Calcutta and it took me a minute to realize my error.
I seriously love your srapbook, and wish my kids had any interest in doing projects like this. I guess I should be glad they’re happy to do Lego history.
